Time to Cook

Mulled cider

December 31, 2006 · 1 Comment

My sister and her family came to stay for Christmas this year – all the way from Texas! The first night they arrived, I cooked a huge pot of pasta as I was feeding 12 but more importantly I made up a vat of mulled cider. I love mulled wine but had never attempted using cider. It was so good that I had to send someone to the shop half-way through the evening for more supplies. I’m confident that this drink can be enjoyed throughout the year and you could also do a non-alcoholic version, if desired.

Vast quantities of cider (I like Strongbow)
Cinnamon sticks
Mulling spices (allspice, nutmeg, coriander seed)

Using a large pot, gently warm the cider over a low heat. Break the cinnamon sticks up into smallish pieces and add the mulling spices. I cheated and bought Schwartz Mulled Wine Spice that comes in little sachets. I opened up one sachet and popped it in and left another one ‘whole’. You may want to strain the cider with a small tea strainer when serving. I didn’t, just left a ladle handy and let people help themselves after the first glass.

It’s very delicious! We will be enjoying this tonight as we’re staying in the warm. The UK is going to be battered by heavy rain and strong winds tonight. (In case I hadn’t made it clear, the reference to the weather should confirm that I am, in fact, British.)

Happy New Year!

Jumping on the bandwagon…

December 30, 2006 · 4 Comments

As anyone who knows me will attest, I have an almost unhealthy interest in cookery books, recipes and food! I also like to cook. So I’ve decided to put my resources to good use and start blogging about food. It’s one of my many New Year’s resolutions to be more productive with my time and actually do more of some of my favourite things. What could be more fabulous than combining food with writing? So welcome and let’s get started…
