My mum came back from a recent trip to Lancashire with a cookery book for me – Million Menus. It’s got funky cover, is spiral bound and according to the blurb, you can mix and match a million different three course meals. How is this possible I hear you cry? While I haven’t actually worked out the permutations, it works in a similar way to those children’s books called something like Misfits (answers on a postcard please), where the book is divided into three sections. In this case, appetizers, main courses and desserts. In the Misfits books, I believe it was heads, torsos and legs. Anyway, the result is that you can plan simple, hearty or elegant meals (and presumably all three in one sitting, if required) simply by flicking over the pages and putting together your combination. It’s fun!
The only recipes I have tried so far is chicken risotto a la milanese and peach and ginger fool although not on the same night. It was my first foray into risotto as I was under the mistaken impression it took hours to cook, but this is not the case and it went down very well in our household. This seems to be a running theme with the recipes here, I may have to write an article about it! Just having a browse through the book has reminded me what a fab book this is, each recipe has a colour photo so you get an idea of what you should be aiming for, not 100% necessary but very handy all the same.
I’ve popped the link to amazon.co.uk up for the book simply because I’m in the UK but I’ve checked and Million Menus is available in the states as well with a slightly different cover.
